Men's Coxless Four (M4-)
2000 Olympic Games
Pre-Olympic Summary
August 13, 2000 -- This event, with Stephen Redgrave of Great Britain
going for his fifth consecutive Olympic Gold medal, a feat never before accomplished in
any Olympic sport, is likely to be the most hotly contested event in Sydney. After
cruising through three straight World Championship gold medals in '97, '98 and '99, and
winning the first two legs of World Cup racing in Munich and Vienna, the British boys were
finally beaten in Lucerne by Italy, New Zealand and Australia. This may have raised some
questions about the prospects for the Brits in Sydney, but they must still be considered
the favorites for gold, with a significant footnote for their Lucerne experience. Norway
and France, the other 1999 World finalists, who have also done well in World Cup
competition earlier this summer, and a new combination from the United States, are also
serious medal contenders.
