Pre-Olympic Summary

August 13, 2000 -- The first three finishers at the 1999 Worlds, Germany, Ukraine and Australia, will return to Sydney with their 1999 boats intact. The hottest boat so far, however, in World Cup racing, has been Italy. Italy placed 7th at the 1999 Worlds and returns with 3 of its 1999 members. Italy also placed 2nd and 1st, respectively, at Vienna and Lucerne following a line up change between those regattas, and defeated Germany, Ukraine and Australia in the process. Two other crews coming on strong are Netherlands, 4th at 1999 Worlds, but 3rd in Munich and 2nd in Lucerne, and Austria, 5th at 1999 Worlds, but with 6th, 1st and 3rd place World Cup finishes. Picking the favorites here is like catching the three fastest flies in a horse barn.
