ROM dogged the USA which led for over 1500 meters until ROM came through USA in the
last 500 for the gold. The USA had to hold off CAN in the last 500 to preserve the silver,
but in the end lost and settled for bronze. The USA crew is the defending Olympic silver
medalist crew from Atlanta, which has been out of competition for 3 years since they won
their silver medal. The moves by AUS and ROM on the leader USA in the early going started
in the second 500 meter interval. (see JAMCO Replay for 2nd
500, with both ROM and AUS turning gold) In the third 500, ROM went through AUS and was
0.7 seconds behind USA withe 500 to go. That was not enough of a lead for the USA which
was passed by ROM for the gold and AUS for the silver. CAN in 4th place made a run at USA
also in the last 500, but fell short. The last two places went to RSA and GER.LANE CREW RELATIVE POSITIONS ELAPSED SPLIT
