Women's Coxless Pair (W2-)

Pre-Race Analysis

Preliminary Heats

Winners to Finals. Others to Repechage.

Heat 1

NED (Lane 1), USA, GER, ROM, UKR (Lane 5)

With the winner advancing directly to the finals, this race should be hotly contested to the finish line, unless someone breaks away by 1500 meters. Expect all out efforts from everyone, at least until the 1500 meter mark. ROM won the most recent race at the Lucerne World Cup in July, and should be the favorite to win this race and advance to the finals. ROM's competition should come from GER, a new combination with no previous Worlds or Olympic medals, who were 4th at the Lucerne World Cup. More competition will come from the USA returning Olympic silver medalists, who are making a comeback after a 4- year absence from competition. The USA was 5th in Lucerne in July, 4 seconds behind GER.

Heat 2

RSA (Lane 1), RUS, AUS, CAN, GBR (Lane 5)

This race could be a barn burner. CAN, AUS, RUS and GBR were 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th at the 1999 Worlds, and return here with their boatings unchanged. At the Lucerne World Cup in July, AUS turned the tables around on CAN and defeated CAN by slightly over 1 second. In that same race, AUS and CAN placed 2nd and 3rd overall behind ROM. RUS and GBR may lie in the weeds a bit and save themselves for the repechage rather than mess around with AUS and CAN at this early stage of racing.
