Women's Double Sculls (W2X)

Pre-Race Analysis

Preliminary Heats

Winner to Finals. Others to Repechage.

Heat 1

AUS (Lane 1), NED, USA, GER, GBR (Lane 5)

GER is the overwhelming gold medal favorite and should win this heat to advance to the finals. The other crews will probably push to the 1000 meter mark, unless they find themselves with GER at that point. After that point, they will probably save themselves for the repechage. The GER duo of Jana Thieme and Kathrin Boron have amassed 18 medals, 15 of them gold, in their 21 previous Worlds and Olympic races.

Heat 2

SUI (Lane 1), CHN, LTU, ROM, FRA (Lane 5)

A good race between LTU and ROM could develop here for the winner's ticket to the finals. LTU was 2nd to GER at the Lucerne World Cup in July and 4th at the 1999 Worlds. ROM, with a new combination this year, was 2nd to GER at the Munich World Cup in June, and together the Romanian duo has amassed 24 medals, 7 of them gold, in their 35 previous Worlds and Olympic races. CHN, 2nd at the 1999 Worlds, but with a different combination this year, is a darkhorse.
