Heat 1ROM (Lane 1), CHN, USA, RUS, GBR (Lane 5) RUS, the bronze medalist at the 1999 Worlds, is favored to win this race and advance to the finals. The USA , 4th at the 1999 Worlds, will challenge RUS. However, in the final of the Lucerne World Cup in July, RUS placed a close second (1.8 seconds behind ROM), and finished 8 seconds ahead of the USA. GBR has not shown speed in World Cup racing sufficient to stay with the other two crews. Heat 2DEN (Lane 1), UKR, GER, AUS (Lane 4) GER is the gold medal favorite and the reigning World and Olympic Champion. GER has won both of its World Cup appearances this year in Munich by 1.5 seconds over UKR, and in Lucerne by 1.8 seconds over RUS. Put you bets on GER to win this race and advance to the finals.
