Men's Single Sculls (M1X)
Pre-Race Analysis
Preliminary Heats
Winners to Semi-finals. Others to Repechage.
Heat 1
BRA (Lane 1), KAZ, ITA, CAN, GBR, MEX (Lane 6)
Derek Porter of CAN, 3rd at the 1999 Worlds, should win easily to qualify for the
semi-finals. None of the other scullers in this race has any previous Worlds or Olympic
experience.
Heat 2
PHI (Lane1), TUN, NZL, BUL, SVK, LAT (Lane 6)
Rob Waddell of NZL, the 1998 and 1999 World Champion, should win comfortably to qualify
for the semi-finals. Ivo Yankiev of BUL, 5th at the 1999 Worlds, is likely to save himself
for the repechage, rather than challenge Waddell. Reinholds of LAT and Ziska of SVK, 9th
and 12th at the 1999 Worlds, should do the same.
Heat 3
EST (Lane 1), PAK, CZE, GER, ARG, ALG (Lane 6)
This is likely to be the most contested of the Men's singles heats. Vaclav Chalupa, 4th
at the 1999 Worlds and at the Lucerne World Cup in July, should win comfortably.
Challenges to him could come from Juri Janson of EST and Marcel Hacker of GER, but they
are more likely to save themselves for the repechage.
Heat 4
CHI (Lane 1), USA, SUI, EGY, KOR, NED (Lane 6)
Xeno Mueller of SUI, the defending Olympic Champion and winner over Waddell, Porter,
Chalupa and the other favorites at the Vienna World Cup in June, should win this heat
easily and advance to the semi-finals. Don Smith of the USA, who has done well in previous
World sweep oared events, is new to sculling, relatively untested, and will likely use
this as an experience race and save himself for a test in the repechage.
