Pre-Olympic Summary

August 13, 2000 -- The gold medal in the Men's Single Sculls seems to be up for grabs between Xeno Mueller of Switzerland, the 1996 Olympic Champion, and Robert Waddell of New Zealand, the 1998 and 1999 World Champion. Normally, the nod would go to Waddell, having won two recent Worlds over Mueller, the 1998 and 1999 World Silver Medalist. However, in their one meeting this summer at the Vienna World Cup, Mueller won, with Waddell second and Derek Porter of Canada, the 1999 World Bronze Medalist, third. Porter should be favored for the Bronze in Sydney over Vaclav Chalupa of the Czech Republic. Chalupa defeated Porter at the Vienna World Cup regatta, but lost to him later in Lucerne.
