Great Britain's new combination (Searle and Coode) turned the tables on Australia's favorite for the gold medal, defeating AUS convincingly in a wire-to-wire victory. The third qualifier for the semi-finals was CAN who successfully challenged SLO for that position. GBR's performance underscores the difficulty in forming a new Olympic coxless pair in 2 months, as AUS has done following Drew Ginn's disabling back injury at the Lucerne World Cup in July. AUS did stop GBR's move in the 3rd 500 meters, but lost a full length in the last 500 to finish two lengths behind.
