Pre-Olympic Summary

August 13, 2000 -- Australia, the 1999 World Champion, looks like a good bet for gold in Sydney. Tragically, a back injury to Australia's 1999 World gold medalist, Drew Ginn, has eliminated him from the Olympics. His long-time partner, James Tomkins, is now rowing with Matt Long, a newcomer to World and Olympic competition. Nevertheless, the new combination, formed only minutes before the first World Cup heats in Lucerne, won that regatta, and are now the favorites for gold in Sydney. France and Croatia, 2nd and 3rd at the 1999 Worlds, return to Sydney intact, have both done well in World Cup races, and should give the Aussies a good run for the gold. But watch out for Italy, 4th at last year's Worlds, with two 2nd place finishes in World Cup competition at Vienna and Lucerne.
