With 500 meters to go, 5 of these boats should be overlapped. Only 3 of them will make
the FA final. YUG seems to have the best finishing speed and should win. ITA is blazing
fast in the 3rd 500. If ITA can match that speed in the last 500, then ITA could place
2nd. It could also burn out by going so fast in the 3rd 500, and end up 4th in the race
and out of the FA final. The USA boat shows good level speed down the course and is in a
good position to place 2nd or 3rd and make the FA final. It must expect challenges from
both ITA and AUS, however, in the last 500 and be ready to stop them or it could be 4th
and out. No one should ever underestimate the AUS boat, with James Tomkins, two time
Olympic gold medalist and the defending World Champion in this event. Tomkins and his new
partner won the last World Cup in Lucerne, came in the favorites for the gold medal, and
could still make it all the way to the top podium. However, this race would be a good one
for them to win to get the favored lane in the FA final. AUS must not let the pack get
away in the 2nd 500 meter interval to improve its chances for a victory here.
