2000 Olympic Games
Pre-Olympic Summary
August 13, 2000 -- The Slovenian double sculls entry, with Luka Spik and
Iztok Cop, seems almost certain to repeat its 1999 Worlds gold medal in Sydney. This
double has won both of its World Cup appearances this summer in Munich and Lucerne. The
German boat, last year's silver medalist at Worlds, slipped to 6th, 4th and 5th,
respectively, in its three World Cup appearances, and may have difficulty medalling in
Sydney. By contrast, Tufte and Bekken of Norway, last year's bronze medalists at Worlds,
have come on strong in World Cup races finishing 2nd, 1st and 2nd on three occasions.
Hungary, last year's 5th place boat at Worlds, has also done well so far at the World Cup,
finishing 3rd each time in its three appearances. As it now appears, France and Germany
are the likely challengers to Norway for the Bronze Medal in Sydney.
