Lightweight Men's Double Sculls (LM2X)
2000 Olympic Games
Pre-Olympic Summary
August 13, 2000 -- Italy, with Elia Luini and Leonardo Pettino, the 1999
World Champion, was second to another Italian double in the Vienna World Cup, but reversed
that loss and was 1st in Lucerne, beating its countrymen decisively. Compared to the other
nations in this event, Italy seems to have a lock on the gold medal in Sydney. Challenges
should come from France (5th at 1999 Worlds, but with 1st and 2nd place finishes in World
Cup competition), Germany (3rd at 1999 Worlds, and 3rd in two World Cup competitions), and
perhaps Switzerland (4th at 1999 Worlds, with a 3rd, 2nd and 10th in World Cup races).
Last year's silver medalist from Australia returns with its 1999 boat intact, but has
turned in disappointing 6th and 8th place finishes in World Cup racing at Vienna and
Lucerne.
