Women's Eight (W8+)
2000 Olympic Games
Pre-Olympic Summary
August 13, 2000 -- Romania shows no signs of giving up the gold medal in
Sydney, following its 1999 World Championship effort. In three successive World Cup
competitions, Romania has placed 3rd in Munich, changed its line up, and placed 2nd and
1st in Vienna and Lucerne. Romania reversed it earlier Munich World Cup losses to both
Netherlands and Belarus, defeating both of them in Lucerne. Others coming on strong in
World Cup racing were Canada (3rd at 1999 Worlds and 2nd in Lucerne), and Australia (5th
at 1999 Worlds with two 3rd place World Cup finishes at Vienna and Lucerne. Lurking very
prominently in the background, however, is the United States which elected not to race in
World Cup, but which placed second at both the 1998 and 1999 Worlds. Absent altogether
from Sydney will be the German eight which was defeated in the Lucerne European
Qualification regatta by Great Britain.
