Pre-Olympic Event Summary

August 13, 2000 -- Ekaterina Karsten (formerly Khodotovich), the defending Olympic Champion from Belarus, and the 1997 and 1999 World Champion, is probably unbeatable for Sydney and a sure bet to win the gold medal. Competition for that honor, however, will come from Zhang of China (World Cup winner in Vienna), Germany's Rutschow-Stom (2nd at 1999 Worlds with two 3rd's and a 2nd place finish in World Cup racing), Neikova of Bulgaria (3rd at 1999 Worlds with a 2nd place finish at the Lucerne World Cup races), and Fedotova of Russia (4th at 1999 Worlds with 2nd and 4th place finishes in World Cup competition).

September 11, 2000 -- With the withdrawal of Zhang of China and McBean of Canada, and with Fedotova of Russia switching from the single to the quadruple sculls, this changes the finalist possiblities considerably in the Women's single sculls. It seems to assure the three medals will go to Karsten, Rutschow-Stom and Neikova, but opens up opportunities for making the finals to a number of scullers.
